“Only God can judge me…” ~Tupac, and almost every other wannabe gangsta rapper after.
Well, you are right! Only God can judge you, and He promises in His word that He will. This is why, though it may feel better to say this phrase because it bothers you for other people to call you out on your mess, it is more dangerous to flee good advice.
People used to say, “well God knows my heart.” That is scary! For if God knows my heart, He knows that I knew I needed to go to worship Him, but were just too lazy to get up and go do it. He knows that though I know I was doing wrong, my desires to do it were just stronger than my desires to do right. And so though I am making myself feel better before man by saying that, I am actually condemning myself more before God, for I am acknowleding that I FULLY understand God’s awareness of the wickedness and spiritual neglect that I willfully participate in.
Indeed, God is the only one who can judge you, and telling those who genuinely care about you enough to remind you of God’s own Word about the wrath that you are bringing upon yourself with your copout about “judge not, that ye be not judged,” is actually a huge mistake. The wise one will actually welcome correction that is done in love, for it is written, “it is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to haer the song of fools (Ecc 7:5),” and “open rebuke is better than secret love (Pro 27:5).”
But, you’d rather have the support of your destruction, the song of fools, who tell you that it is okay, or even good, to continue in wickedness, despite you, yourself, proclaiming that God can judge you.
God not only can, but His Word promises that He WILL judge you! Jeremiah 11:20 states, “But, O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the reins and the heart, let me see thy bengeance on them…” Yes, not only is God judging our hearts, but shall execute his vengeance for that which is unrighteous! Just the same, “every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment (Matt 12:36).” So, in other words, all of that foolish talk, all of that vulgarity that He is not pleased with (Eph 5:4), all of that unrepentent sin, all of the voluntary wickedness, all of the hateful treatment of others, all of the covetousness, all of the sexual immorality, all of the stealing, all of the idol worship (money, celebrities, etc.)… all of the sin, surely shall be judged, by God and God alone.
But… shouldn’t you do everything you can NOW to get right before then, and actually take correction and suggestions for improvement wherever you can get it???
Whereas none of us may be perfect, as we all strive, we can help each other do more together than we ever could alone… Yes, only God can judge you, but if the people who care about you can at least try to help by pointing out areas to fix now, that is one less thing to be held against you in that day of judgment. Only God can judge you, and only He can save your soul from the disease of sin which results in eternal death and damnation, but maybe, just maybe, through the help of those He uses, that judgment doesn’t have to be so bad.
So, before being so quick to be so defensive to those who care about you and throw up scriptures like “judge not, that you be not judged” – all out of context of the full meaning of that scripture – and to copy a common phrase like “only God can judge me,” consider what that truly means… God is the only one who can judge you for your eternity, and you can rest assured that He shall!
